Guidelines for Public Participation

The Buffalo Valley Board of Education welcomes public input at its meetings. To ensure productive and respectful dialogue, the following guidelines apply:

Individuals wishing to address the board should sign in at the beginning of the meeting. Each speaker is allotted up to three minutes. Comments should be directed to the board as a whole, not to individual members or staff. The board may choose to respond at the meeting or defer a response to a later date.

Personnel matters, student-specific issues, and topics under legal review are not appropriate for public comment. Individuals with concerns about specific employees or students should contact the superintendent's office to schedule a private meeting.

The board reserves the right to modify these guidelines as needed to maintain orderly meetings.

Running for the Board of Education

School board members are elected by the community and serve five-year terms. Elections are held as seats become available on a rotating schedule.

To be eligible to run for a seat on the Buffalo Valley Board of Education, a candidate must have resided in the district for at least six months preceding the first day of the filing period, be a registered voter within the district, and hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Candidates file their declaration of candidacy with the Latimer County Election Board during the designated filing period. Upon filing, candidates pledge to complete at least 12 hours of board member training within 15 months of election, as required by Oklahoma law.

For detailed information about the filing process, election timeline, and training requirements, visit the Oklahoma State School Boards Association or the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
